NASA scientists recently enacted the farthest planetary encounter in history, and what they learned when they got there was a big surprise: planetary object MU69, nicknamed Ultima Thule, is not snowman-shaped as originally thought. Instead, it’s comprised of two flatter objects described by Science as “two lumpy pancakes smushed together.”
By now, you may be wondering: what does this have to do with research administration software? Hear us out.
In order to gain deeper understanding of MU69, scientists had to see it from a different angle. The New Horizons spacecraft conducted a “fly-by” on January 1, 2019, and initial images from the mission seemed to show two spherical objects joined together. But as New Horizons transmitted additional pictures and information, scientists were able to take a closer look. With data in hand, they could see that the dual parts of MU69 are more like flattened lobes. This information gives scientists a greater understanding of how some planets may form, and has far-reaching implications for future space exploration.
Looking at data from a different angle brings new insights—and that’s as important in research administration as it is in space exploration.
Your RA system is full of useful information, but it can be hard to access and evaluate. In order to gain a complete understanding of processes and efficiency, and address them in a data-driven way, you may need to view data from another angle. In other words, you have to fly past the space snowman to discover that it’s actually two lumpy pancakes.
For some electronic RA systems, that may mean configuring reports to display data in an optimal format. For others, it may mean adding reports that aren’t included in the base software. That’s where Bad Rabbit can help—our Research Visions platform offers dynamic, customizable reporting, bringing your data to life with powerful visualizations that increase understanding. Whether it comes from outer space or an electronic research administration system, data drives powerful change.
If you’re ready to view your data in a new way, we’d love to assist in your mission. Reach out for a consultation today.
